The Built Environment and Documentary Strategies
(Rhine/Ruhr)
Kai-Olaf Hesse (dt./engl.)
For the first time BerlinPhotoWorkshops offers a workshop in Dusseldorf in
cooperation with
The Sonic Blog.
The Built Environment and Documentary Strategiesis a photography workshop
for artists using photography, practicing photographers, advanced students of
photography, photo journalists, media-artists, as well as advanced photo
amateurs who want to develop project- and concept-oriented work.
Documentary photographic practices as a means of exploring the built environment
represents an inexhaustible source of "learning to see". As an artistically
transformed expression and visualization of an idea, the "seen" image is a
trustworthy representation of the material world.
This seminar series aims at leading participants towards individual visual
solutions through photographic means thereby developing original, autonomous
concepts. It further enables an individual visual language, making possible the
ability to investigate and articulate visual and media-related phenomena, in
order to find or invent meaningful interpretations.
It explores the techniques of image making and finding.
Group projects and self-led themes set the basis for the analysis, investigation
and documentation of relevant social, political and aesthetic questions
incorporating specific photographic strategies.
An understanding of the effect of images, through one's own picture-making
process, and its relationship to a visual literacy - the ability to 'read'
images. Thus, advancing towards an experienced, critical and profound
understanding of the photographic medium. In particular, the interpretation and
evaluation of visual representations as two-dimensional images of our world.
