Urban Photography
Karl-Ludwig Lange was
born in 1949 in Minden and moved to Berlin at the age of 17 to start an
apprenticeship as a photographer. He worked as an intern at the dpa (German
Press Agency) and subsequently, as an assistant to Will McBride. Since 1973 he
has worked on his own artistic projects and holds an significant position within
the field of Stadtfotografie (urban photography) in Germany.
Urban Photography does not mean photographing single buildings, but moreover the
city itself. The city as a specific form of the cultural landscape, an
interaction of topography, architecture, and its inhabitants...
One could attempt to summarize Lange's seemingly matter-of-fact and objective
depictions as illustrations of architectural and topographic subjects. But his
works always offer much more than that: which is a particular visual expression
of his photographic concepts concerning the advance of urbanism...
