The Photographic Portrait
This workshop will explore the contemporary representation of the human
image. What is a portrait? What is specific to the photographic portrait? What
do photographic portraits tell about the people depicted and of the times in
which they live? Can portraits reveal more than that? And what is the function
of such contemporary representations?
At the core of this workshop will be the self-directed project of the
participants themselves which will be assisted, discussed and edited within the
framework of the workshop. I will draw upon participant's work to introduce
essential elements concerning the photographic portrait. This process will lead
to working on individual image-series, which will explore content and the formal
aspects of portraiture. Image editing and -discussions within the group will be
a consistent element of this workshop.
Lectures will also be presented, addressing important positions within
contemporary (portrait) photography. Mindful of varying knowledge and abilities
of participants, I will facilitate each individual with the necessary technical
tools and know-how of camera and lighting techniques.
