Once there was a time when photography was perceived as a trustworthy portrayal
of reality. Today, and not only since the advent of digital manipulation
photography is seen more as an interpretation of reality – a subjective
representation of the real. Within popular media, photography as evidence
continues to have relevance, however, contemporary photographic practice, even
"documentary", has shifted its evidential interest considerably.
Consequently, this workshop does not focus on the classic Berlin reportage or on
the typical city portrait as it can be seen in mainstream media and magazines.
On the contrary, the aim of this workshop is a subjective exploration of the
phenomenon of the city – Berlin in this case. Artistic approaches are welcome
as are subjective-documentary positions, however, a defined subject matter and a
coherent visual language are crucial.
The goal of this workshop will be for each participant to compile and develop a
complete series of photographs on a self-defined theme or project. The workshop
will provide a theoretical introduction to relevant existing bodies of work and
to assist participants in defining a subject and/or project. The workshop will
also act as a space to give advice and critique as the work evolves. Where
possible, practical advice concerning possible contacts for the project will
also be given.

progresses.
