Ostrava. Peripherie oder was?

Ein Projekt der Initiative 'Za Starou Ostravu' (Für das alte Ostrava)
Geschichte und Geschichten schreiben ihre Spuren ins Stadtbild: Lesbar,
wenn man um die Codes und den Kontext weiß. Ansonsten erahnbar, auf
mitunter verstörende Weise.
Ostrava - Stadt der Peripherien: Siedlungsgebiete verschiedener Größen
und Jahrgänge, Industrieanlagen, Zechen, Verkehrsadern. Den
Erfordernissen der Geologie, der Transportlogistik und des
Kühlwasserbedarfs entsprechend zwischen Flüsse und Gebirge gestreut,
unterbrochen von Acker und Grünland, Waldungen und Brachen. So hat jede
Siedlung ihre eigene Peripherie; die nach außen gedachte rethorische
Frage des Projekts bekommt eine weitere, nach innen gerichtete
Sinnebene.
Welche Probleme diese Struktur in sich birgt, die Ostrava weniger als
Stadt denn als Gebiet erlebbar macht, vermag ich nur zu ahnen. Mir
stellt sie sich allerdings auch als Potential dar, das bei umsichtiger
Nutzung und Bewahrung ein Maß an Lebensqualität gewährleisten kann, von
dem man in anderen Ballungsräumen nicht einmal zu träumen wagt. Was
unter dem Zugriff des internationalen Kapitals von diesem Potential
bleiben wird (und für wen), ist nur eine der beunruhigenden Fragen, die
diese Stadt stellt.
2004 beschäftigten mich vor allem die Veränderungen des historischen
Stadtzentrums. Die hereinbrechende Großflächenwerbung vor (noch) grauen
Fassaden signalisierte, daß hier nichts bleiben würde, wie es war. Schon
bedrängt von Shopping Malls, Baumärkten und den üblichen Verdächtigen,
schienen große Teile des Zentrums in einer Art hektischen Stillstands zu
verharren. Dieser Zustand zwischen nicht mehr und noch nicht war es, den
ich zu photographieren versuchte.
2005 galt meine Aufmerksamkeit darüber hinaus auch den Räumen zwischen
den Siedlungen, den Rändern, eben: den Peripherien, die dieser Stadt ihr
eigenes Gepräge geben. Diese Arbeit wird weitergeführt.

Ostrava. Periphery or what?
2004/05
A project as part of the initiative ' Za Starou Ostravu ' (For the Old Ostrava)
History and histories leave traces on the cityscape: being readable only
if one knows the codes and contexts. Otherwise they can only be guessed
at, sometimes in a disconcerting way.
Ostrava – is a city of peripheries; evolving settlements across times
and ages – industrial plants, mines and traffic networks. The
requirements of geology, transportation and the industrial demands for
water-cooling dictated such a layout. Settlements lie between nearby
rivers and mountains; ruptured by fields, grasslands, woods and
wastelands. Each settlement in turn has its own periphery thereby the
rhetorical nature of the project's title evokes a broader, more
introverted, significance.
I can only imagine the problems such a structure holds, making Ostrava
less a city and more an 'experiential region'. However, for me, it also
represents a potential when developed in a prudent and caring manner, to
ensure a quality of life of which other such urban locations can only
dare to dream of. Nonetheless, whether such a potential will be realised
(and for whom) under the impact of international capital, is only one of
the disturbing questions, this city faces?
In 2004, the changes within the historical city centre began to interest
me. The encroaching billboard advertisements located in front of (still)
grey façades signified that nothing would remain as it was. Already
pressed by Shopping Malls, DIY stores and the other usual suspects,
large parts of the city centre seemed to have fallen into a kind of
hectic 'stillness'. This condition between 'no more' and 'not yet' was
what I tried to photograph.
In 2005 my attention went beyond and began
to focus on the areas between the settlements, those edges: those
peripheries, which give their own sense of place to the histories of
this region.
