Leitolf (dt./engl.)
Eva Leitolf’s summer workshop Stories is aimed at photographers,
advanced students, artists and photojournalists who would like to develop an
independent piece of work of their own in the intense atmosphere of a
week-long workshop.
On the basis of a thorough examination of the different traditions of
photographic storytelling each participant will develop the concept and
approach for their own freely chosen project.

Eva Leitolf, from Postcards from Europe
Our introduction to the theme of storytelling will include lectures, a
reader specially put together by Eva Leitolf for this workshop, and possibly
a visit to an exhibition. We will cover the linear narrative structures of
the classical photo essay as well as deconstructivist, alinear and
associative concepts of narration.
The central thrust of the workshop will be the development of a concrete
working method and its practical implementation in the participant’s
personal visual language. Following the whole process from research work and
exposé-writing through to finding the fitting form of presentation, we will
examine how each decision made – be it of an aesthetic or conceptual nature
– affects the work. Eva Leitolf will explore these possibilities with
participants in individual and group sessions.

A workshop with Eva Leitolf
In the course of the workshop Eva Leitolf will assist participants in
shaping their own personal narrative vision for their photographic work and
constructively developing pre-existing approaches.
Eva Leitolf has extensive teaching experience in Germany and abroad.
Her most recent completed work, German Images – Looking for Evidence,
addresses the way our society deals with racist violence and explores the
limits of the depictable. This image and text project has been exhibited in
Germany and elsewhere, notably at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.
Eva Leitolf is currently working a project about migration and Europe’s
external borders, Postcards from Europe, parts of which were recently
published in Zeit-Magazin.
