Portraits in Berlin

Doug DuBois (engl.)

This class will explore the social and visual dynamics associated with the photographic portrait by actively producing portraits in and around Berlin. We will work in several modes: Studio Portraits, with a formal backdrop and controlled lighting; Street Portraits, with an urban backdrop that is unpredictable and changing; Typological Portraits, utilizing conceptual framework; Environmental Portraits, which take into account the social architecture surrounding the subject; and Intimate Portraits, which imply a relationship between the subject and the photographer.

These categories are, of course, fluid and somewhat arbitrary. We will use them only as a basis for discussion and organizing our projects. By the end of the class, my hope is that we outgrow these frameworks and come to grips with the portrait as a complex social rite, deeply implicated in the personal and political understanding of others and our self.

Class participants should bring whatever camera they are most comfortable with using. Digital cameras are essential for daily feedback and critique, lighting (flash or strobe) is not essential but if you have something, bring it; tripods are strongly suggested and lenses of various focal lengths will be helpful. A Laptop, hard drive and appropriate software are required to organize, edit and show your work at the end of the day. Basic image editing software: IPhoto, Lightroom or Photoshop will be fine. Don’t, however, panic or obsess over equipment, this class is about how ideas inform technique and we can work with whatever you bring.
