Experience and Experimentation
Lucia Nimcová (engl.)
Lucia Nimcová, was born in 1977 in Humenne, Slovakia but now resides in
Amsterdam. She is one of the most interesting young photographers in Europe. Her
works, mostly focusing on the Slovak Republic and the bordering Eastern European
countries, transcend established categories. Her strictly documentary approach
is simultaneously, full of fictions: photojournalistic approaches are
intertwined with the charm of archival material from vanished socialist eras,
and contemporary photography meets classic positions. Lucia Nimcová observes
people in-between: politially, personally, in relation to time, fashion and
gender. Her working approach is direct, yet compassionate – it is not about
hiding but participation.

Lucia Nimcová studied at the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam
and at the Institute of Creative Photography, Opava and earned the Leica Oskar
Barnack Preis and the ECB Photography Award. Aside from her own photographic
work she has curated various exhibitions and since 2005, has been teaching
workshops.
Nimcová’s workshop, ‘Experience and Experimentation’ will be about fundamental
aspects in photography: How exactly do we see and in what manner do our
expectations affect what we actually see? Why and how do we relate so strongly
to photographs? Why do we relate to images at all? And while exploring these
aspects, the prevailing contexts of photographs will be of great importance: Who
is the individual showing us an image and for whom was the image produced?
Photography is always a complex layering of popular, intellectual, personal,
social and scientific elements; more than any other medium, photography
therefore begs the question of authorship.

Over the course of the workshop, projects of all participants will be viewed
personally. During the week we will try to coordinate special needs, ideas and
personal views of each participant. We will seek to find answers for questions
that might occur, and also try to discuss aspects mentioned above. Personal
thoughts and ideas should inspire our creative process and new experiences can
be gained within the group. Lucia Nimcová is looking forward to this highly
unconventional workshop! Come and experience!!!
The workshop will be held in a small group of 5
to 10 participants. The fee is
475,- € (incl. 19% VAT). All interested applicants should
apply by
email before June 14 2010. Please attach 5 to 10
examples of your own work and/or a link to your personal website. You should
also attach a short statement about your photographic skills and motivation.
